Engineering Manager

The job in a nutshell

We’re on the look-out for an Engineering Manager with a technical background to empower and mentor our engineers, enabling excellent growth and development.

Engineers join us for the technical challenges we overcome and stay for the incredible culture our Engineers build and grow.

We work closely with Product, Design, business ambassadors, and others from the broader business in multi-functional squads, each of which has the autonomy to practice agile in the way that works best for them.

Our tech stack utilises some of the latest technologies within an AWS environment with a backend in Java, Python and PHP.  

As a technical specialist, you'll not only provide technical oversight and leadership to major projects, but also act as a functional manager. Being responsible for the product and solution architecture, the role will place a key focus on quality control and code optimisation. You will nurture and influence standard methodologies, and help ensure these are followed across the company.

As a functional manager, your role will also include optimising and reviewing the performance of teams, with an aim to increase the quality of engineering as a functional leader. To help us scale our engineering teams effectively, you will have close involvement with our hiring process.

You will have the opportunity in this role to work on new to market product propositions that are passionate about saving customers time and money across a variation of household bills, something we can all relate to!

Skills and experience you’ll need to have

  • Sound knowledge of agile leadership principles
  • Strong software architecture skills
  • Experience building and scaling high achieving engineering teams 
  • Big picture thinking - accurately diagnosing problems and building innovative solutions
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to partner closely with Product Owners and Business Heads
  • Extensive experience in SDLC including the testing cycle.
  • Relevant and practical experience leading software development teams
  • Experience working with ahrd-working engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their technical decision-making in agile environment.

What you’ll be responsible for

  • Represents the Director of Technology within their business unit.
  • Builds a ‘team first’ environment and embeds a Lean culture.
  • Performs line management duties for the business unit.
  • Motivates and oversees the personal development of Engineers and Junior staff including mentoring.
  • Undertakes resource planning, recruitment and retention actions.
  • Is responsible for training and development.
  • Maintains relationships and communication between departments.
  • Leads a programme of continual improvement of products and services within their business unit.
  • Owns the successful, timely delivery or projects and initiatives.
  • Contributes to engineering strategy.
  • Collaborates effectively with fellow leaders across the business for mutual success.
  • Helps build delivery roadmaps for their business unit.
  • Crafts and implements a devops strategy to provide 24x7 uptime for customer facing touch points.
